…on Last Day of the 2022 Cricket Season

The 1st XI’s final match of the 2022 cricket season was played away at Saltburn Cricket Club on 3rd September, 2022. The 2022 campaign was concluded with an away win and 25 points.

A fine all round performance by Hartlepool Cricket Club Professional, Paul Braithwaite, ensured an excellent win on a wicket with uneven bounce and one that favoured seam bowling.

The hosts won the toss and elected to bat first. A fine opening spell of bowling by youngster, Maxwell Jackson, with 3 for 33 from seven overs, had Saltburn in early trouble. An entertaining stand of 80 runs by Jacob Midgley, (67 from 80 balls), and Vishant More, (78 from 95 balls), enabled Saltburn to reach 211 all out from 48.2 overs, which was a good score on difficult wicket.

We managed to get off to a good start. Vagadia and Tebbett put on 36 runs for the first wicket, but once these two batters were dismissed, their was a batting collapse!

Tom Gavin joined Paul Braithwaite at the wicket with Hartlepool in a spot of bother. However, they both showed great application and great spirit, plus superb running between the wickets, to see Hartlepool over the line for another 25 points. Gavin was out for 52 from 58 balls. Braithwaite scored a superb 62 not out from 91 balls. The other not out batter at the end of the match was Josh Tribick.

In addition to Jackson, it was also great to see youngster, Oliver Martin, playing in this match, thereby providing him with valuable experience within the 1st XI environment.

This away victory over Saltburn completed a very good second half of the season for the 1st XI, with eight wins and a brace of draws from the last 10 matches. That enabled the team lead by Tom Gavin to finish in 5th position in the NYSD Premier League, with 10 wins and some 308 points. This was an excellent performance by a very young team, so well done to all concerned!
