Hartlepool Cricket Club pays tribute to Phil Mitchell

Hartlepool Cricket Club pays tribute to Phil Mitchell

Chris Smith3 Sep - 08:14

Hartlepool Cricket Club were deeply saddened to learn of the sudden death of former junior coach and long standing club member, Phil Mitchell.

Phil always seemed to be smiling, his joy of life was infectious and will be missed.
- Chris Smith, Junior Chair

Phil, a successful solicitor, was a regular to park drive and joined the coaching set up for a number of years to help bring on the next generation of Hartlepool cricketers. Having been primarily from a rugby background and a club legend at Hartlepool Rovers Rugby Club, he brought the same enthusiasm and discipline to his cricket coaching and team management. He took on the role of team manager of u11’s before moving onto u13’s.

Phil, who always had a smile on his face, really helped to progress some junior cricketers. One of his former juniors, current second team captain Brad Frank, is thankful for the opportunities that Phil gave him when in his u13 team.

Brad stated “He was my coach at u13 level in 2012. He was a very kind person and gave up a huge amount of time to look after the team on a Sunday morning for matches, and during the week for training. Despite having a rugby background, it was clear he was very passionate about cricket too. His knowledge of the game helped to bring through and develop some top cricketers that have represented the club at first team level.

I also remember him being very encouraging and keen to give everyone an equal opportunity, something that sometimes is overlooked in junior sport. Despite the talent in his team, he never lost sight of the fact that players who are keen and willing to learn deserve a chance too. I admit I was never a natural talent, I just loved the game of cricket, I wanted to learn and improve. My opportunities improved under Phil’s guidance, so I am very grateful to have had him as my coach and team manager during that period.

Our thoughts go out to his wife Carol, his daughter Grace, and his two sons Thomas and Jonathan. Jonathan is also a product of the Hartlepool Junior Cricket Club youth system.

As a mark of respect, a minutes silence will be held before senior team fixtures this weekend.
Phil will be dearly missed at park drive by all his family, friends and former junior players he coached. Details of any funeral arrangements will be shared in due course.
